 Fairbairn fight steps up

Fairbairn fight steps up

09 Feb, 2010 09:28 AM
RESIDENTS fighting to keep the Essendon Cricket Club from relocating to Fairbairn Park are due to make a presentation to Moonee Valley Council tonight.

As well as presenting a petition with more than 1000 signatures of residents opposed to the move, the delegation will argue against the loss of community space and change of nature of the reserve if the cricket club moves from Windy Hill.

Resident spokesperson Angela Christensen said a planned new pavilion with a liquor license would also bring extra noise and a loss of amenity.

The Essendon Football Club, which wants the cricket club out of Windy Hill, paid $40,000 to develop the Fairbairn Park master plan.

The football club has also set aside $2.5 million towards the proposal - $1 million of its own money on top of $1.5 million in State Government funding.

Mrs Christensen said resident opposition to the move was as strong as ever.

"The park master plan and the relocation of the cricket club should never been put together."

Essendon Cricket Club president Simon Tobin said inaccurate statements had often been made by some opponents to the move, including that the cricket club would take up 40 per cent of the park.

"The reconfiguration of only a portion of the park will result in eight cricket ovals and four soccer ovals – exactly the same as currently exists.

"The City of Moonee Valley advises that the total area of the two ovals to be used by ECC is less than 14 per cent of the park - the second oval will be utilised by junior cricket on Saturday mornings exactly as occurs now."

Residents will make their presentation from 6-7pm at the council civic centre tonight.

Let's play cricket, football and soccer in Fairbairn Park like everyone else has done for a long time without introducing the so-called improvements planned for us by the Essendon Cricket Club.

Furthermore, the riverside edge section of the park ocupied by the playground, the canoe club and Scouts should be left alone and present parking spaces maintained.

Canoe Fred represents his members at the Essendon Canoe Club well, but he's wrong if he thinks there will be traffic problems associated with the proposed move by Essendon Cricket Club to Fairbairn Park. Anyone who cares to check will know talk of large crowds and traffic problems at Premier Cricket is simply untrue.

Unfortunately, some opponents of the move continue to deliberately promote inaccurate and untrue information about the move. The truth is ECC promotes and develops local young cricketers and is the stepping stone on to state and international cricket.

All that is proposed is the upgrading of existing cricket facilities. No additional ovals and no less ovals than currently exist.

We are not taking the ovals anywhere! The existing pavilion at the northern end of the park will be replaced with a more attractive and modern one that will be shared with other park users.

There will always be knockers whenever any new project is put forward. Let's hope for the sake of common sense and the future of any other sporting groups within the municipality, that the council have the resolve to vote on the merits of the proposal rather than look to appease the noisy minority.

Essendon Cricket Club president Simon Tobin is "on record" saying that there would be no significant changes to the park or the impact on existing users of the park. I doubt his claim "of no significant changes" will hold water in 12 months' time.
