 Fairbairn Park plan adopted

Fairbairn Park plan adopted

04 Mar, 2010 12:20 PM

AFTER months of debate Moonee Valley Council voted to adopt the controversial Fairbairn Park Master Plan at its Planning and Citizens meeting on Tuesday.

The master plan details a multi-million dollar upgrade of the park which is Moonee Valley’s largest sporting facility.

The plan also allows for the relocation of the Essendon Cricket Club to Fairbairn Park away from their base at Windy Hill.

More than 1000 residents had signed a petition against the plan fearing a major loss of amenity if a Premier Grade cricket club took up residency.

The adoption of the plan was supported 7-2 with councillors Rose Iser and Paul Giuliano opposed.

During debate on the matter and making reference to the lack of resident support for the cricket club move, Cr Iser said supporting the master plan in its current form represented a sad day for representative democracy.

It appears as though the residents' original fears have been confirmed. The decision for the relocation of the ECC to FP was made last year prior to the draft masterplan being submitted for 'consultation'.

The Draft Masterplan was out for consultation for about 5 months, yet the only amendments made have occured in the last week. Needless to say these token gestures were not well received by the community.

It has been a frustrating process, at every turn suggestions have been cast aside with reasoning along the lines of, you have misunderstood the facts and the ECC says they need it.

Throughout the process the council never held the ECC accountable to provide reasons for their requirements which included having two ovals together, the size of the ovals etc. Independent investigations were not conducted to determine if the ECC's demands were reasonable, they were just accepted because the ECC said so.

It is also distressing to note that the ECC's and the Council's response to community queries is the same. Time after time they both utlised the arguement 'you misunderstand the facts'.

I guess I misunderstood the fact that this decision was made months ago.

We the members of the 'Essendon Canoe Club since 1925' and situatet at the north western section of "Fairbairn Park" since 1933 will have been totally ignored if the original plan for the upgrading of this park goes ahead.

Our club has clearly stated and asked for the continuing need of open access and maintainance of the present parking facilities for our constant competitions and activities. We urgently need to be included in the final outcome of the planing decisions.
