Fostering a sense of community for Oromo Muslims

AFRICAN youth face numerous barriers in Australia, particularly if they are young Muslim women.

Speaking at a recent Oromo youth forum in Footscray, Aisha Ali said becoming involved in community radio and events had helped involve her in the Australian Oromo community.

"I personally think as a young, female, Oromo Muslim, that it is a great start and involving us will help us as youth gain skills that will help bring the independence of our people.

"We are working side by side, receiving mentoring from influential people in our community. It's thanks to them that I have learnt more about Oromia's history."

A second Oromo youth forum will be held in Footscray later this month, looking at issues faced by young men and women from one of Africa's largest ethnic groups.

"This youth forum is designed to address the needs for us as youth growing up in Australia because we face different issues every day. This youth forum is a place where we can discuss all these issues and more."

The inaugural Oromo youth forum was held last month with the aim of fostering a sense of pride in being young, Oromo and Australian.

Issues raised included difficulties at school, low self-esteem and family issues.

Oromo community leader Aliye Geleto said young Oromos who left school reported difficulties finding work.

"Some were not in study and were either working part-time, unemployed, or not in the labour force at all.

"They continue to be disadvantaged in many ways, both financial and social."

He said as a result of the first forum, a commitment was made to expand social activities for Oromo youth through education, sport, language education, vocational training, immigration support and social services.

The next Oromo youth forum will be held from 3-6pm on May 18 at Level 2, 289-293 Barkly Street, Footscray.
