THE boys from Rosehill Secondary College are out to prove dancing 'aint for sissies. This year the school introduced a dance subject specifically for boys, aptly titled Dance For Boys.
The idea was the brainchild of dance teacher Marissa Mortellaro, who lobbied the school's board to get the subject approved.
Ms Mortellaro believed an all-male setting would be less confrontational for students who wanted to learn.
"I had a couple of kids interested in the first few years, and I'd always get two or three boys so I decided to create the subject and get it approved," she said.
"I thought that they would get intimidated dancing with girls because usually you're a minority in the subject."
The move proved a masterstroke, with 15 boys signing up for the subject in it's first year. The class will next month collectively take part in Moonee Valley Youth Services STEP OFF, formerly known as Get Krump'd, an urban dance crew competition.
The boys are known as The 6th Sense and have been learning a range of hip hop and breakdancing moves for the competition.
"It's exciting. They're very enthusiastic and willing to give everything a go."
■ STEP OFF is on at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Saturday, April 10, from 7pm.
