Jack of the drought, so Strathmore acts

STRATHMORE Bowling Club is taking drastic steps to drought-proof its assets.

The club's usually vibrant greens look more like 'dirty browns' at present, with major earthworks under way to replace the traditional lawn greens with synthetic carpet.

Club president Kevin Parks said several clubs across the state were investigating the use of carpet greens, with fears of stage 4 water restrictions being introduced if weather patterns continue.

The installation of synthetic carpet is possible through State Government funding, Moonee Valley Council grants, and club fund-raising.

"You've got to be practical. We will save a lot of money on maintenance too, considering you just have to vacuum the carpet," Parks said.

The speed of the carpet would stay at a relatively consistent level, and it would be ready to roll out by October when the pennant season starts.

New surrounds for the greens have been installed through sponsorship from Strathmore Community Bank.
