LITTERBUGS look out - a gang of litter ninjas will soon be attacking rubbish-strewn streets in Flemington.
Armed with barbecue tongs and a can-do attitude, conscientious residents will be on a mission to restore pride in the 'hood by cleaning up after their neighbours.
Long-time Flemington resident Katherine Lockett, who just received $3000 from Moonee Valley Council to get her 'litter ninjas' project off the ground, became fed-up of coming home to a messy sight of takeaway wrappers, cigarette boxes, and soft drink cans - so she started picking up rubbish in her street.
"Swooping in at sunset after a day's littering was done, I felt like a ninja cleaning in secret when all the hustle and bustle of the day was over, which gave me the idea of a fun campaign to get people to adopt their street," Ms Lockett explained.
"If people take ownership over their street they will care more and start to take pride in it.
"I love living in Flemington. It's full of charm and character but the littering takes away from that appeal."
The work-from-home writer said living along the pub and takeaway routes between Racecourse and Mount Alexander roads meant coming home to a daily pile-up of rubbish.
"I've witnessed many passers-by dumping wrappers, plastic and food as if the street were a tip. Hopefully if they notice the area is clean, they might be less inclined to leave their rubbish there." Ms Lockett said she hoped to use the funding to advertise for recruits, and make stickers and a T-shirt to brand the campaign.
"Teenagers are some of the worst culprits for littering, so I thought designing a T-shirt with a funky logo might spark a bit of curiosity and get people to think about their littering habits.
"I don't want to seem like a nagging, cranky old lady, so I came up with a fun, humorous campaign to be more inclusive and light-hearted about it. It's something anyone can take part in."
