TRADERS on Mount Alexander Road have backed Moonee Valley Council's ambitious plan to relocate the CityLink toll point at Moreland Road.
Fed up with drivers dodging the toll and clogging up the road, which links one side of Moonee Valley to the other, the council is seeking a meeting with Transurban CityLink and Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas to mount a case for moving the toll point.
The council intends to work with Moreland Council on the plan as the neighbouring municipality also suffers from drivers heading down its local roads to avoid the toll.
The Moreland Road toll was installed by CityLink in the late 1990s, tolling an existing part of the Tullamarine Freeway, which - as its name implies - was 'free' to use.
Denis Kosnar from the Mount Alexander Road Village Traders Association said the flow-on problems caused by 'toll-dodgers' was discussed at every traders meeting.
He said it impacted on the strip's amenity, safety and congestion and had become worse every year.
"It was a hot debate for a while then it went quiet but it's back on the agenda.
"Lets's assume we've had a trial period to see how it's gone. Well, we have had the trial; there have been a lot of issues so things can be improved and the toll point should be moved."
Mr Kosnar said the fact the cost of the toll had gone up meant more people were avoiding paying.
"It's not just $1 any more, it's $1.80 and that's a lot of money if you just go through that one toll point every day, day-in, day-out.
"It needs to be moved, it would be a win-win for everyone - traders, drivers and the council."
Moonee Valley Council is yet to confirm whether a meeting has been arranged with Mr Pallas or Transurban.
