IT'S called the Big West Festival for a reason: over 10 days in November, the western suburbs will play host to 325 artists and 500 community collaborators in 60 performances and exhibitions.
Organisers yesterday launched the program for the 2009 festival - the seventh such biennial event to be held - in Footscray's Nicholson Street Mall.
Festival director Karen Hadfield said while many voices and cultures would be represented in the festival, all had taken on the overarching theme of "Home is Where the Art is".
Highlights include:
Big Backyard: the free opening-weekend party on November 21 with bands, film, performance and food.
The Big Knit: US-based textile artist Dave Cole will lead a team of knitters who will cover Footscray's Stockbridge. The woollen bridge will be "cast off" on November 28 with a recreation of a dance scene in Flashdance.
Tin Chef: the melting pot heats up on November 25 as chefs battle for the title of Best Chef in the West. Entrants confirmed include chefs from Seddon's Le Chien and Happy River Cafe in Footscray and the Blarney Stone Irish Pub in Yarraville.
Art-Vend: creating the ultimate "art on the run", Nick Ilton will install a vending machine at Footscray railway station that dispenses artworks for $1.20.
