 Huge day for Whigham

Huge day for Whigham

09 Feb, 2010 08:33 AM
BEREFT of its stars, an undermanned Essendon cruised to a 13-2 victory over Cheltenham in the Baseball Victoria State League division one at Boeing Reserve on Saturday, but the interesting story was not the game itself.

It was a great day for Bombers' starting pitcher and US import Dave Whigham, who has worked by the slogan 'good things come to those who wait' over the past six months.

With the deep Bombers pitching staff away on state representative duty, Whigham seized the moment to pick up the win.

This was not only a great step forward in terms of his aspirations with the Bombers, but also his life ambitions. Whigham's journey to the mound at Boeing Reserve started on July 2 last year. It was the day he landed in a hospital bed after a batter smashed the ball back at him, crashed into his temple and created a scull fracture.

After the game in which he got 12 outs and conceded just two hits in six innings, Whigham wrote on his blog: 'The end result was my first win and an overwhelming feeling of 'I'm back again'.

'I'm back means much more than you could ever understand.'

The Bombers maintained a stranglehold on third position.

They host Upwey-Ferntree Gully at Boeing Reserve on Sunday at 3.30pm.
