'Huge honour' for opening pitcher

03 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
CASEY Jones will be entrusted to start on the mound in the Victorian Aces' season-opener against defending champion Perth Heat in the Claxton Shield at Geelong Baseball Centre on Friday night.

It will be a landmark occasion for the ever-reliable Essendon starting pitcher, who has rarely put a foot wrong in the Baseball Victoria Vodafone State League division one in recent years.

"It's a huge honour," Bombers coach Russell Spear said.

The Bombers will have no fewer than seven representatives in the Aces squad.

Jones and Spear will be joined by the McIntyre brothers -Scott and Dean - Tristen McDonald, Josh Davies and Ross Hipke.

Spear, 32, who started his national league career as a 15-year-old in the old Australian Baseball League with the Melbourne Monarchs, said the environment at Boeing Reserve made it easy for players to move up in the game.

"The best thing about Essendon is it's been a stable environment for a long time," Spear said.

"It's been a controlled environment for these guys to go out and learn to compete and learn to play the game."

Passion for the club and the game is paramount.

Not one of the players who walks out in a red and black helmet is paid for the pleasure - unlike at most other division one clubs.

"It's never ever been about money," Spear said. "It's about guys who want to be there."

The seven stars who will represent the Aces have been mainstays of the Bombers' line-up.

The next generation is snapping at their heels.

Spear is adamant the assembly line of quality players is not going to stop.

He envisages many more youngsters will sign with Major League Baseball clubs in the United States, feature in the new national league and continue the Bombers' love affair with the finals.

"It's not going to stop," Spear said.

"There's half-a-dozen more guys younger than us who are certainly in the mix."

Spear says that in the twilight of his career, his coaching is more important than his playing.

But he is still one of the first selected when the Aces' squads are announced.

His longevity in the competition can be put down to how much he treasures representing the Big V.

"Outside of missing one year through injury I haven't missed any, so I've been fortunate in that regard.

"I've played a lot of baseball at that level and I was fortunate enough to captain Australia for a couple of years.

"Playing for Victoria is certainly something I hold close to my heart."

The Aces will play a double-header against the Heat.

The first match is at 7.05pm on Friday with the second taking place on Saturday at 3.05pm.

Essendon escaped with a 3-3 draw in its Baseball Victoria Vodafone State League division one midweek clash with the Geelong Giants at Melbourne Ball Park in Altona.

The Bombers were nowhere near peak form and relied on a last-inning run and the containment of closing pitcher Ross Hipke to earn a share of the points on offer.

While it was a better showing than in their loss to Upwey-Ferntree Gully four days earlier, Bombers coach Russell Spear admitted it was a "disappointing" Thursday night performance.

"For us it's one that goes down as a loss because it's one we needed to win.

"We certainly showed signs of improvement as we continued to fight and we continued to have a go."
