Grammarians go clubbing for big triumph

19 Jan, 2010 08:03 AM
OLD Essendon Grammarians produced one of the upsets of the summer in upending previously undefeated Yarraville Club by five runs in a thrilling Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division encounter at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar Oval.

The unexpected win has seen the Bombers join three rivals in a logjam from fifth to eighth. All are within one win of fourth-placed South Caulfield with three matches remaining.

Clubbers captain Justin Baker won the toss and elected to field, allowing the Bombers to post a competitive score of 8-174 off 40 overs. Bombers middle-order batsmen Tim Linley (39 off 58) and Travis Withers (39 off 45) gave the innings the kick-along it needed.

The Clubbers left it late to make their charge and were bowled out for 169.

Opening bowler Richard Lindsay bagged four wickets and Paul Shipp snared three.

St Bernard's Old Collegians beat Williamstown CYMS by 43 runs at Fearon Reserve in Williamstown. The Snowdogs' latest win leaves them in fifth position and still in the finals hunt.

A three-wicket haul to promoted all-rounder Jack Gay and two each to Gerard McMahon and Luke Davis saw CYs all out for 133 in 36.1 overs.

Duncan Snell (46), Evert Bekker (42) and Craig Osborne (34) helped chase down the runs four wickets down.

Airport West-St Christophers edged closer to the summit, eclipsing Royal Park-Brunswick by 31 runs.

Chris Amini - vice-captain of the East Asia Pacific at the Australian Country Championships in Albury recently - continued his good form for the West Saints with 46, while spinner Robert Rutley took three wickets.

■ The north division's No. 1 ranked side Strathmore lost to Sunshine United.

Doutta Stars were crushed by Greenvale - err, Dale McDonald. McDonald, a former Premier Cricket player, showed his class with six wickets and 48 to be a constant thorn in the side of the Stars.

■ Moonee Valley all-rounder Amit Chaudhary proved the difference in his side's north A1 local derby with Avondale Heights at Canning Street Reserve. Chaudary scored 50 and claimed four wickets in the Valleys 26-run triumph.
