ESSENDON'S top-10 draftee Jake Melksham is thankful for the support of Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School and teacher Ken Fletcher in juggling his VCE and football commitments.
Time management is a concern for elite under-age sports stars trying to gain the best possible education and ENTER score for university - particularly the many individuals who miss out on selection at the AFL national draft.
Fletcher - a 264-game champion with the Bombers and Victorian representative - takes a keen interest in the progress of PEGS-based footballers, shedding light on what it takes to prepare for the draft.
"'Fletch' and the school have helped me out a lot in the last couple of years," Melksham said.
"They did treat me like any other kid - but they understood what I had off the field as well with my demands in football.
"They tried to help me manage my time as much as they could and, in the end, hopefully I get a good result with my VCE."
Melksham was prepared for an interstate move after Port Adelaide had shown interest.
The Power secured Andrew Moore and John Butcher with picks eight and nine, leaving the Glenroy resident with a dream move "just down the road".
"It's amazing," Melksham said. "It was probably one of the longest days in my life. I never thought leading up to the draft that I'd actually stay in Melbourne and it's good to come to a secure club with a young list and I'm really excited at the moment.
"I want to get down there and start working hard and get into it as soon as I can to get myself a head start."
Melksham comes from a split family, but his parents David and Tanya Leathers were a constant in his life and family support was never too far away with brothers on either side.
"At times it wasn't easy living with a split family with brothers on both sides," he admitted.
"But my family has had a major influence, I'm pretty close to my brothers and Mum and Dad have been great to me. It's a great support base that I've got."
Melksham will use the summer to earn respect from the players and coaches at Bomberland.
"I'm just going to do what Matt and the rest of the coaches want me to do and develop as best as I can physically and tactically."
