Blockbuster, Lucas add spark to EDFL opener

08 Dec, 2009 03:00 AM
THE Essendon District Football League has released its draft fixtures for 2010 and wasted no time slotting in a blockbuster.

Reigning premiers Maribyrnong Park will unfurl its flag against contender to the throne Keilor at Maribyrnong Park on April 17.

There will be much interest in the Greenvale's home opener against Aberfeldie as it will unveil boom recruit Scott Lucas for the first time.

Triple AFL premiership star Chris Johnson will take the helm at Avondale Heights for the first time when it hosts West Coburg at Canning Street Reserve.

Oak Park will make its return to A-grade after a brief stint in the second tier with a home game against Paul Barnard's Craigieburn, while Doutta Stars and Strathmore will reignite their local rivalry at Buckley Park.

The grand final rematch between Maribyrnong Park and Greenvale will take place in the fifth round on May 15.

The league's football operations/administration manager Greta May revealed the complicated B-grade draw was decided by the AFL's computer software.

"The A-grade draw does itself as all teams play home-and-away," she said.

"The B-grade draw is more complicated. It was the first time we've used the AFL computer for our B-grade draw."

Likely title contenders Airport West and Pascoe Vale will square off in round one.

Relegated Glenroy faces a tough away trip to Tullamarine.
