ESSENDON used the AFL's trade week to improve its position in the national draft.
The Bombers have stockpiled four selections - 10, 24, 26 and 33 - in the first two rounds of the last uncompromised draft before expansion clubs Gold Coast and Western Sydney enter.
With a genuine tilt at a premiership seemingly a few years down the track, the Bombers took advantage of St Kilda-bound Andrew Lovett's wish to leave the club and sent Jay Nash to Port Adelaide to improve their order in the draft.
Arriving at Windy Hill is exciting small forward Mark Williams - an experienced addition to a young, developing forward line that will be hit hard by the loss of Matthew Lloyd and Scott Lucas.
When fit and firing, Williams has the potential to be a 50-goal-a-year forward. He achieved the mark with Hawthorn in 2005-06, when he was the club's leading goalkicker.
Williams' career highlight was a three-goal haul in the Hawks' shock grand final win over Geelong in 2008.
"Like Hawthorn, Essendon has a lot of exciting young talent and I want to do my bit for the team and play my role," the former South Fremantle player said.
"Essendon is one of the powerhouse clubs in Melbourne and I am looking forward to playing in some of the big games throughout the year.
"They also have a good indigenous base down here and hopefully I can use my leadership qualities to come down and help develop those younger guys."
