Snowdogs pups to take on New Zealand

22 Oct, 2009 11:11 AM
FOUR of St Bernard's Old Collegians most promising teenagers - Tom Sullivan, Jack Wheeler, Luke Sullivan and Harry Overman - are ready to spark up a trans-tasman rivalry with New Zealand on the Australian rules field.

The Snowdogs quartet will represent the Victorian Amateur Football Association's under-18 team in two games against New Zealand's under-20s in Auckland on Saturday and Monday.

The two test matches will coincide with AFL New Zealand's National Provincial Championships.

VAFA chief executive Michael Sholly said it was an exciting concept.

''The tour will provide an opportunity for the VAFA to reward and develop high achieving under-age players within our competition, as well as assist with the development of Australian Rules in an evolving market,'' he said.

''There is much interest in Australian rules football in New Zealand, which has a talent pool untapped by AFL clubs.

''The VAFA is delighted to provide NZ's national representatives the opportunity to compete against a representative side from football's heartland.''

The VAFA's squad was selected from the inaugural under-18 section.

The squad is: Tom Sullivan, Jack Wheeler, Luke Sullivan, Harry Overman (St Bernard's); Evan Cole (Northern Bullants), Elliot Coombe, Tim Kershaw, Will Cheesman (University High/Victoria University), Todd Crane, Chris Docker, Kaine Reynolds (St Marys Salesian), Ben Ratcliffe, Drew Leroy, Mitchell Trimble, Tim Gumley (Therry Penola), James Hunt, Tim Scott, Jake Pappon, Ben Hogan (Oakleigh), Nicholas Ross, Patrick Birtles, Eamon O'Donnell (Old Camberwell), Joel Shipsides, Matthew Goodman, William Schubert (St Bedes Mentone Tigers).
